Barbora Fiřtíková
Junior Lawyer, Banking & Finance
I joined Clifford Chance in 2024 as a paralegal, shortly after completing my third year of studies at the Faculty of Law at Charles University in Prague. Prior to joining the firm, I gained experience in general practice at a smaller law firm, which provided me with a solid foundation and an early insight into the practical realities of legal work.
Having completed my law studies in 2025, I transitioned into my current role as a junior lawyer within the Banking & Finance team. While my earlier experience in general practice was invaluable, I had long been drawn to the complexity and pace of work that a leading global law firm offers and to the Banking & Finance sector in particular. Joining Clifford Chance at an early stage of my career has contributed significantly to both my professional development and my personal growth.
What I find most rewarding about my work is the opportunity to follow transactions through from beginning to completion. Each matter involves far more than the repetitive drafting of standard documents. It encompasses negotiating transaction terms, preparing a broad range of documentation, and maintaining close communication with clients and counterparties throughout the process. This hands-on involvement builds a deeper understanding of each client's objectives and encourages a genuinely engaged, transaction-wide perspective.
From the outset of my career, I have valued the opportunity to work on live matters and to witness firsthand how the law operates in practice. Each day brings new challenges and fresh opportunities to develop my expertise in banking and finance and capital markets practice, making this an exceptionally rewarding time to be building a career in this field.
My advice
My advice would be to embrace the journey, not just the destination. The process of learning and developing as a lawyer is one to be valued in itself, not merely endured on the way to the next milestone. Lean into the pressure and the challenging moments as it is often precisely those experiences that prove to be the most formative in shaping the lawyer and the person you will become.
The work
What excites me about my work is commitment to delivering the best possible solutions for our clients, not only by understanding their needs, but by anticipating them. We have the privilege of advising on some of the most significant transactions not only in the Czech Republic, but across Europe and globally. While certain matters may appear similar on the surface, each transaction presents its own distinct challenges and opportunities. One aspect of our work that I particularly value is that every team member is involved from the outset and entrusted with real responsibility from day one. This environment can be demanding, but it is precisely that challenge which accelerates both our legal development and the broader professional skills that are essential to becoming a well-rounded lawyer.
Learning and key skills
One of the most valuable aspects of working at Clifford Chance is the firm's genuine commitment to the holistic development of its lawyers. We are actively encouraged to broaden our skill sets beyond technical legal knowledge, placing equal emphasis on the development of soft skills such as leadership, negotiation, and communication. This approach not only enables us to deliver stronger outcomes for our clients, but also to grow as versatile professionals. During my time at the firm, I have developed a number of skills that I draw upon both in my daily practice and in my personal life. These include the ability to be assertive and decisive under pressure, as well as the discipline of thinking several steps ahead, anticipating potential obstacles and addressing them proactively before they give rise to delays or complications.
The people
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the environment within the office. The support extended to me by associates and other junior lawyers is something I hold in high regard. I feel fortunate to work within a team on whose members I can rely not only for professional guidance and expertise, but also for personal encouragement during more demanding periods. While the environment of a leading global law firm can, from the outside, appear intense and highly competitive, my experience at Clifford Chance has been quite the contrary. Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do as a team, whether that means working collectively on complex, high-stakes matters, sharing knowledge and best practice, or simply supporting one another through the challenges that inevitably arise. It is this spirit of cooperation that enables us to deliver the highest quality advice to our clients while continuing to grow as legal professionals.
My most rewarding experience
The closing of a transaction is always a significant moment, regardless of its scale or complexity. There is something genuinely fulfilling about reaching that final milestone and seeing all parties, the client, the counterparty and their advisors, walk away satisfied with the outcome. Each closing is a reminder of why this work matters. What I find most rewarding, however, goes beyond the transaction itself. The practice of law, particularly in a transactional context, is rarely about winning arguments. More often than not, it is about collaboration and working constructively alongside opposing counsel to identify creative solutions that serve the interests of all parties involved. It reflects, I believe, the very best of what good legal practice looks like.
